Like every April 26 since 2000, International Intellectual Property Day is celebrated worldwide, a date chosen to commemorate the enforcement in 1970 of the convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Through a balanced system in constant change and adapted to the needs and dynamism required by the present day, the World Intellectual Property Organization focuses on the legal framework that allows researchers, companies, artists and other individuals to protect their creations and obtain an income from them, while guaranteeing the benefit of their creations for society. As usual, every year during World Intellectual Property Day, a central theme to be discussed is suggested by the organization. In 2024, the emphasis has been placed on the importance for our future of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which consist of 17 interconnected goals to be achieved by 2030, designed as a plan to reduce the negative impacts generated by a constant deregulation of resources and global policies.
The goal of these SDGs is to consolidate a more sustainable global reality, with the arduous task of balancing social, economic and environmental sustainability. In this scenario, intellectual property plays a fundamental role as one of the most precise tools through which generate the appropriate framework and achieve the development in innovations and creativity necessary for these purposes. The 17 goals are: End poverty; Zero hunger; Health and well-being; Quality education; Gender equality; Clean water and sanitation; Affordable and clean energy; Decent work and economic growth; Industry, innovation and infrastructure; Reducing inequalities; Sustainable cities and communities; Responsible production and consumption; Climate action; Undersea life; Life of terrestrial ecosystems; Peace, justice and strong institutions; Partnerships to achieve the goals.
As usual on this April 26, both WIPO and the different Trademark Offices of all the member countries will be carrying out different activities and publications in commemoration of such a special day and such particular problems, so from our firm we encourage you to participate and get information about them by accessing their respective websites.
